After an operating loss of $ 665 million last year, Ford automaker has announced first-quarter earnings of $ 2.1 billion in 2010. Ford is still working on paying off borrowed money, though they are the only automaker that did not take government money. Three Ford vehicles were on the top 10 sellers list in the United States in 2010.

The No. 2 carmaker is Ford

Last year, Ford Motor Company managed to increase its market share by 2.4 percent. General Motors Company is the only automaker with a larger market share than Ford. The only car in the United States to sell more than 100,000 units this year is the F-series pickup truck.

Ford still in debt

The company, however, is not in the black, though Ford was able to post an operating profit this quarter. Ford Motor Company has $ 25.3 billion in instant cash currently. However, the company also has $ 34.3 billion in debt. Also, the company is facing a 2013 deadline to pay off loans amounting up to $ 12.7 billion. Ford made one payment of $ 3 billion right after the end of the first quarter – so if they manage to maintain their current sales, the company should be able to pay off all debts on time.

New Ford models launching

During 2010, Ford Motors is planning on introducing redesigns of two vehicles: the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus. This movement is focused on turning the spotlight away from the SUV and truck-heavy product line that has upheld the company in the last few years. Ford also introduced the Start urban concept vehicle at the Beijing auto show. In the next four to six years, the 1-liter engine is slated for production.

The Ford stock earnings

About 60 cents per share was lost with Ford stockholders last year. By the end of the first quarter of 2010, stockholders saw a 50-cent gain. If Ford could manage to make full payments to its lenders, it will be in a well-built financial position than any other United States carmaker.
